While your mug can\u2019t hug you, we did find some evidence that its smooth tactile glazing can enhance calmness and wellbeing (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1053810018304720?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\">link here<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Focus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The peppermint oil in the candy cane can help improve memory <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18041606\/\" target=\"_blank\">link here<\/a><\/span>), cognition, and mood <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/nrl.northumbria.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/41284\/1\/AJPS_2019062014282966.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">(<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">link here<\/span><\/a>). You can find a general overview of the positive effects of peppermint via a student-produced science magazine at Northeastern University (<a href=\"https:\/\/nuscimag.com\/aroma-in-action-enhancing-cognition-with-peppermint-5f13e1c00fdb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">link here<\/span><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Antioxidants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hot chocolate mix includes cocoa, which has long been studied for its antioxidant properties and positive impact on heart and gut health (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/12\/7\/1908\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">link here<\/a><\/span>). Whether you heat it up ahead of the grading swath or use it as a reward for completing your work, we hope you will enjoy it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Build In Rewards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The author of <em>Atomic Habits<\/em> James Clear advocates that we \u201clayer\u201d habits\u2014complete a less-desirable task and follow up with a task we enjoy.&nbsp; Several colleagues shared variations on this theme:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cGrade for X minutes, then a walk or yoga or a snack or anything other than grading.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cPacing myself: how many days, how much grading \u2014&gt; grade only # per day and then I\u2019m done.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cAlso, \u2018treating myself\u2019 by going somewhere different and nice (but grading-appropriate), like a favorite coffeehouse.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI try to set a goal and set a reward. Grade all the students&#8217; assignment and the reward is a walk. Grade all the students&#8217; project and the reward is a TV show. Grade all the final drafts and the reward is a big glass of wine by the fire pit with my feet up.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Scheduling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI write on my to do list: \u2018grade 30 min\u2019, and I write that 3 times per day as needed so I get to cross it off 3 times per day. Very satisfying!\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI live by my calendar, so blocking off a specific chunk of time is helpful for me. If I don\u2019t finish in that block of time, I look at my schedule and find another block, but I don\u2019t just keep going. If I haven\u2019t finished during that block, it\u2019s usually time for a change even if it\u2019s to grab a snack or go for a quick walk.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Make It Social<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cCo-grading: sitting with a favorite colleague while each of us grades. Take breaks to catch up, enjoy each other. Back to grading.\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI like to make grading social (like co-grading). We\u2019ve put on a couple of grading parties for new TAs this semester. We hoped facing the dragon together would help them.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI used to grade together with my TAs and we\u2019d finish with pizza. Side benefit was hearing the TAs work through questions about some of the more creative exam responses with each other\u2026a lot of learning going on.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>The Bias-Resistant Method<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Grading for Equity <\/em>author Joe Feldman urges instructors to \u201cgrade learning, not behavior.\u201d Colleagues shared some grading motivations that automatically reduce bias in evaluating student work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cFor quizzes and exams, I find it faster and just mentally \u2018easier\u2019 to grade question by question, rather than exam by exam.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grading question by question \u201c&#8230;is the only way I grade to make sure partial credit is as consistent as possible.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>The Course Design Method (which will only help for next semester)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThe sassy answer?
