{"id":1321,"date":"2026-09-21T13:02:51","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T13:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rollins.edu\/endeavor\/?p=1321"},"modified":"2026-09-21T17:30:50","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T17:30:50","slug":"relationship-status-with-ai-its-complicated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rollins.edu\/endeavor\/2026\/09\/21\/relationship-status-with-ai-its-complicated\/","title":{"rendered":"Relationship Status (with AI):\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0Complicated\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rachel Winter |&nbsp;<em>Director,&nbsp;Strategic Communications MA Program; Lecturer,&nbsp;Communication&nbsp;Studies<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>2026-27&nbsp;Rollins&nbsp;AI Faculty Fellow, Social Sciences Applied<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like any&nbsp;new technology, developments in generative AI are accompanied by a host of complex social issues.&nbsp;There are legitimate concerns about&nbsp;access, equity, and consequences for the electrical grid, the water supply, and the increasingly changing climate.&nbsp;Meanwhile,&nbsp;we must contend with the fact that, should we refuse to&nbsp;leverage&nbsp;the technology, we (and our students) will be left behind.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the field of&nbsp;communication specifically, we&nbsp;are faced with preparing&nbsp;students to succeed in a workplace where&nbsp;messages between humans are increasingly mediated through generative AI.&nbsp;Our students are likewise navigating this&nbsp;paradigm shift, trying to balance the need for technical preparation with their ethical obligations to their fellow humans.&nbsp;For me, some of the most rewarding work around AI&nbsp;involves&nbsp;embracing this grey area.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"446\" height=\"254\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.rollins.edu\/endeavor\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-21-at-8.55.12-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1323\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7559630497725078;width:323px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>(data visualization instructor example)&nbsp;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before encouraging students in my Social Media Communication course to experiment with using AI to generate example social media posts,&nbsp;I&nbsp;start with a lesson&nbsp;on AI and water usage.&nbsp;Participants must&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/watercalculator.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">calculate their&nbsp;water footprint<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;based&nbsp;on daily activities,&nbsp;social media scrolling and, finally, their generative AI&nbsp;habits.&nbsp;Students who may use AI uncritically must consider their contribution to the world\u2019s water bankruptcy, while those resistant&nbsp;to AI-use due to its environmental impact must confront the fact that their water&nbsp;footprint related to their Amazon shopping habit is much, much larger.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navigating the nuance surrounding generative AI with my students helps put this technology into conversation with human developments throughout history that have had neither a&nbsp;wholly positive, nor a&nbsp;wholly negative, impact on the world.&nbsp;For example, discussions of AI add a new dimension to my existing lessons on copyright and remix&nbsp;in my graduate&nbsp;Web Analytics and Social Media Metrics&nbsp;course&nbsp;as we explore the topic of where the data used to train AI comes from&nbsp;and how this complicates (and violates) copyright. Similarly, discussions of the biased results generated by search engines now encompass an exploration of whose voices are most prevalent in the data used to train AI and therefore most likely to influence the results produced.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"467\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.rollins.edu\/endeavor\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-21-at-8.56.42-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1324\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.0964143426294821;width:380px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><br><em>(<\/em>from: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@wasowski.jarek\/google-called-it-clean-inside-was-4chan-training-data-60dd4fc733e6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/medium.com\/@wasowski.jarek\/google-called-it-clean-inside-was-4chan-training-data-60dd4fc733e6<\/a>; image generated by Claude)\u00a0<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For&nbsp;me, the question&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;whether&nbsp;to use AI in the communication classroom.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;how to design activities that&nbsp;facilitate&nbsp;critical engagement with AI as a new tool.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communication technologies are constantly changing, so students need to learn&nbsp;<em>how to learn<\/em>&nbsp;to use new tools.&nbsp;And the fact that I am actively learning a new tool in front of them presents a valuable opportunity to model the&nbsp;processes and mistakes they&nbsp;will&nbsp;encounter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharing the discomfort of learning with my students&nbsp;will hopefully allow them to&nbsp;more meaningfully engage in discussions&nbsp;where they&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;feel I already&nbsp;hold all the answers.
