5/22 : Museo Reina Sofia
This was the second cultural activity that we participated in on our trip to Spain that allowed us to visit a significant landmark in Spain, the Museo Reina Sofia. This was said to be the first of the holy trinity of museums in Spain so I was eager to finally witness what it had to offer. Museo Reina Sofia is filled with some of the most renowned contemporary art from all areas of the world. This being said, we certainly came across some pieces of work that “didn’t speak to me” of which I found it difficult in understanding how it was a masterpiece and much less how it made the cut to be placed in such a famous museum.
Nonetheless, some of the artwork that we came across was stunning. Having previously taken a class in art history, I was able to have a further appreciation when walking around and when I came across the Picasso exhibit I was in awe. I remember studying his “Guernica” in books but to see the artwork in person was an unforgettable experience. Its magnitude and presence in the room naturally gravitated everyone towards it. It seemed like a great wonder of the world, flawless. And to understand the historical perspective through Picasso’s interpretations only added to this. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip to this museum and am looking forward to seeing what else our cultural activities have to offer.
Thanks for sharing! Art is interesting because its so subjective. I’m glad that you were able to see art pieces such as Picasso’s that inspired you. It’s also great that you were able to connect something you had learned in your art history class with what you were experiencing overseas.
