It was raining capfuls (not buckets) for the second day in a row this Wednesday morning. That wasn’t going to keep me from going to the open air market on the cobblestoned cathedral square of the St.-Paulus-Dom. It did mean that I stopped at the cafe on the edge of the square of a latte and read all of the Süddeutsche Zeitung first. The newspaper is full of:
- the latest news about the German double agent who has been selling documents to the CIA
- the huge jousting tournament in Schaffhausen starting soon (http://www.allerheiligen.ch/de/aktuell/ritterspiele-live)
- the contest Switzerland has launched to find a new national anthem (http://www.swissworld.org/en/culture/swissness/switzerland_and_its_anthems/)
But then it was time to take a look at what the market was offering this fine, soggy day. The market takes place on the Domplatz every Wednesday and Saturday morning. The merchants sell from little trailers and stands with tent tops and awnings to keep the drizzle away from customers long enough to make a puchase.
AHA! It was 12:30 — long before the market closed at 2:00 p.m., but some of the merchants were calling out about the bargains they were beginning to offer so that they did not have to carry their wares back away with them. This is what 1.50 Euro will get you if you know when to come to the market … and if it is raining. YUM, YUM!
