Germans are known for a tendency toward cleanliness and order. As a matter of fact, when I have taken students to places like Berlin where “funkiness” and graffiti outweigh flower boxes and traditional Bavarian mural painting, students are often initially turned off. Yet, the Münsteraner have outdone anything I had seen so far.
Streetsweepers — both as individual wielders of brooms and as mechanized vehicles with whirring brushes — are familiar sights on German streets. However, this was my first time observing gentlemen with mobile vacuum cleaners. All the better to get those dastardly cigarette butts out from between the cobblestones in the pedestrian areas (and there are a lot of those) in Münster. And “glutton” — what marketing firm came up with that name?
