The Battle of Berlin was a turning point for Germany. The bombing of Berlin deatroyed the homes of over a half a million people and injured almost 10,000. The author highlights the power and strength of the German airforce and Berlin’s defenses; less than 4,000 Germans were killed.
Despite strong defenses, Berliners were affected by the bombing. People had difficulty breathing the smoky air. When the sirens went off, people scrambled to the air shelter, some getting harmed on the process.
As Sydney brought up, despite the sheer magnitude of the Battle of Berlin, less than 4,000 Germans died. As we witnessed today, the town of Würzburg (which we stopped for lunch the day of our arrival) had about 90% of the city (and military hospitals) destroyed in 17 minutes by 225 British bombs. The city center, which mostly dated from medieval times, was completely destroyed and 5,000 people perished.
However, one of German areas that was greatly affected by the bombs was morale. The people under the Führer became increasingly apathetic and fatalistic attitude.
