When the Soviets finally did invade and went to each house looking for German soldiers I found it very interesting that they were constantly asking for watches and schnapps. These are obviously very different things. I just am not sure the point of taking both men and women’s watches. It seemed almost like a trophy or trading card to them that they could compare or trade with the other soldiers and see who had the best watches. Most shocking is that fact that if citizens did not hand over their watches they would end up being beaten or even killed. Worse was when I read about all of the rapes that happened to the women from the Red Army Soldiers. It was so sad to read about but most horrific is the idea that not all rapes were even reported. It is so sad to see the after fact of the war and how it can damage the life of citizens.
