Hola from Madrid! This is a picture of Toledo, Spain, one of the oldest cities in Europe. We took a day trip here to walk around and take in the history. In turbulent times, the city served as a fortress. There’s water on this side of the city and (approx.) 25-35 ft. walls surrounding the other side. All of the entrances, including the bridges, had 2 gateways to ensure enemies could not get through.
The acceptance of a mixture of cultures makes this city truly unique. Moorish, Jewish and Catholic influences can even be found inside a single church. The primary church (you can see the main steeple at the center of the photo) took over 300 years to build and was open to the public in 1227. The inside (and outside really) is beautiful with the most intricate designs and mixture of artistic styles. When it was first built, the church was similar to our modern day Disney World where people would come from all over the world to view this spectacle. Also, when the city was under attack, it served as a bunker for the people in the city.
All in all, Toledo is a beautiful city with winding roads, interesting architecture, and rich history. Truly a unique city, be sure to visit if ever in Spain!
Adiós!
