Living in Jamaica mostly my entire life gave me one identity, which was heavily intertwined with my culture. “Out of many one people” is not only my country’s motto, but has a greater personal impact. Which is why it was no surprise when I went to Rollins College, I knew I wanted to travel abroad during my time there. Going through a liberal arts education, I realized that transforming my perspective has changed my understanding of the world. Lena Coakley said, “You can’t see the world from somebody else’s point of view and not be changed”. I could study Asian culture for the rest of my life, but truly stepping foot in China and immersing myself will give me the unique experience that I can take with me for the rest of my life. Though I am an individual, my growth and development has resulted from years of my experiences of sharing with others and understanding different perspectives. I believe we add quality to our lives through the understanding of one another.
