I have been in Shanghai for a little under a month now. This is incredible city that is growing at an extremely fast rate. People from all over china flock to this city in hopes to hop on the growing train of success that is occurring in Shanghai. These people bring many things, culture, music, and most importantly distinguished cuisine from all over china. There is a plethora of street food vendors and wonderful restaurants to indulge at in Shanghai. If you have an American palate some of the food may take some getting used too. I must warn you not all food here is for the weak of stomach. I have made it my mission to at least try every type of cuisine at least once. I figure some people somewhere eat it and enjoy it, so it is all about perspective. Some of the more crazy items I have indulged in have been around the table at a Hot Pot. For those of you whom don’t know what a Hot Pot is, it is a very delicious style of cuisine that involves cooking food right at your table. The food is boiled in traditionally two different types of broth, one spicy and one more on the mild side. You prepare the food and there are usually other sauces provided for dipping. Some of the craziest items were goose intestine, which had light flavor and were mildly crunchy, and Lamb stomach was another interesting dish commonly found at the Hot Pot. The menu also included chicken heart and chicken kidney. Needless to say, no part of the chicken goes to waste here. Street food can be indulgent as well, with items such as fried octopus on a stick to scorpion on a stick. What ever your taste buds may be in the mood for, you are sure to be shocked and satisfied in Shanghai.
