It is still so surreal to be here. I am settling in, getting used to the work and class routine, using the tube stations, etc. I am very comfortable and feel confident in what I am doing. The adjustment period has confirmed things about myself that I already knew (routine and rhythm), but it also has shed light on new things I like such as spontaneous travel adventures and learning to let go and go with the flow. Through certain experiences, I am keeping an open mind as usual, but I remain true to my values and preferences. Everything is a growing experience, and although they seem like small things, I know I will reflect on all of these experiences and will be able to articulate and identify how I have developed, personally and professionally.
Just because I am comfortable does not mean I should stop exploring London and the UK and Europe. I feel so comfortable here that sometimes I forget I am here. Or rather, perhaps I must remind myself how truly lucky I am to be here, studying, working, living, growing. I have seen and done so many cool things already, and I am excited for all that awaits. Some things are planned and some are not, but that is the most exciting thing about London and living somewhere new. It is overwhelming and exhilarating all at the same time!
Although writing about each day is detailed and useful to reflect in the future, I will be writing about the highlights since my previous blog posts. My goal has been to see or do something new each week. At least one thing. And another “rule” is that I don’t want to go back to the same place until I go everywhere else. (I know this isn’t realistic, but you get the idea).
That Friday after a good day at work, I was feeling adventurous. Since it’s close to work and the CAPA building, I went to the Natural History Museum in Kensington. I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself a museum person, but I discovered this curious side of me. The inquisitive and love of learning side of me. Strolling around, taking in the scenery on the way, taking part in one of the many great things about London. History. Culture. Food. Entertainment. Charm. Tradition.
Saturday was the CAPA trip to Stonehenge and Bath. What different places they were! A bus trip and tour guide, it was a long, but informative and fun day. Guess you could say I am crossing things off my London Bucket List. Sunday I went to Hyde Park, which I pass the tube station everyday on the way to class or work. It is uplifting and rewarding to go out and do things. Strolling through the park, people watching, admiring the ducks and geese in the waterway, listening to music playing – it felt like a free spirit, a rush. It makes me happy.
Last weekend I went to Buckingham Palace with a couple of friends, where we got a student discount to do the walking tour. It was well worth it. Words cannot give justice to the beauty, luxury, wealth, history, or tradition of such a grand palace. Just wow! Afterwards, we went to Leicester Square to walk around Chinatown. We enjoyed the sights, sounds, and smells, and wound up getting noodles at a great little restaurant! That Saturday night I enjoyed the night life scene with my flatmates. Sunday, I attended the CAPA boat and walking tour in Greenwich. Each borough and area is unique, but they all possess charm and historical value. Rather than comparing places to the US, I have learned to take London for what it is.
Today, I attended the CAPA Camden and Primrose Hill Tour. We explored the diverse neighborhoods and ended up in the middle of the Camden Market! There are actually multiple markets in this area, and it stretches quite a ways down. As with every place I have been to in London, there is so much to do and see and eat, it is overwhelming and exciting to want to experience so much in such a short time. I cannot wait to go back! And tonight, I attended the London Fashion Weekend event. Another form of entertainment and another way to immerse myself in the London culture.
I am loving London and loving life. To see pictures of my adventures, check out my facebook! #laurengoestolondon
