After I got settled in at Jacobs, it was due time that I did some travelling and learn more about Germany’s culture and history. A really convenient thing about the Jacobs program is that you get a semester ticket that allows one to travel across the Lower Saxony region for free. Mind you that the intercity express trains are not covered! Turns out getting to Hamburg was free so there was no stopping us. Mind you again, the travel within Hamburg was not free!
We took the afternoon train and got there at around 6pm. Hamburg was really nice – it is busier then Bremen and gives you the city feel. Personally, this was my first time in a busy city like this and I enjoyed it. At Ehrenbergstraße, there was a pillar dedicated to the people who lost their lives in World War I (1914 – 1918)
After getting dinner and a few beers, we made our way to Reeperbahn. A bit of context – this street is known for its night life and according to Wikipedia it is also known as die sündigste Meile (the most sinful mile). Apart from nice clubs and bars, this street was also known as a red-light district in Hamburg. It truly was an eccentric part of the city but nevertheless the lighting there was good and the atmosphere was lively. We went for a walk through the main-street and made our way to a couple of bars with really nice German beers and good music.
As the night passed, we had two choices – pay money for staying at a hotel/hostel to sleep or experience the Hamburg night a bit more then leave for an early morning train for free. Needless to say, we chose the latter. If you are studying abroad at Jacobs, then definitely pay a visit to Hamburg since it does not cost anything to get there and for the second largest city in Germany, it definitely has so much to offer!
