It has been three weeks since I’ve started classes at Queen Mary. The structure of the classes is much different than that off Rollins. For each class, there is a lecture and a seminar each week. All the students attend the lectures together. This has been my first experience going to such a big lecture hall.
Unlike at Rollins, there are hundreds of students at these lectures. On top of the lectures, each class has a seminar which is usually taught by the teachers assistant. These classes are generally smaller and feel more like the small classes at Rollins College. It is tough to ask questions at the lectures so the seminars allow you to have a more personalized discussion about the topic. I have also learned that Queen Mary University is the only campus based college in England. I like this aspect of the university because being on campus has made it easier to join the community and connect with the others on campus. Like at Rollins, the students here are from all over the world. London is very diverse and I have become friends with students from all parts of the world. Queen Mary University also has a tennis team that plays against other universities in England. I made it through try outs and our first match is tomorrow. We play in the London Valley Tennis Club which is the same location where the London Olympics were held.
