Today is my official two month anniversary in Samoa. It’s unbelievable to me that I have been on this tiny, beautiful island for eight weeks now. We were able to visit American Samoa for a week and to think that months ago I couldn’t point out American Samoa on a map is appalling. American Samoa has more soldiers per capita fighting for our U.S military than any other place in the United States. The sad part is that they aren’t even allowed to vote for their president yet they are so proud to be Americans and proud to wave our flag alongside the Samoan flag.
Being on the island taught me so much about what it means to live in the main land of the U.S and why it’s important to be grateful and appreciative of the opportunities we have there. My host family in American Samoa was the perfect blend of my favorite American and Samoan things. The Samoan hospitality made me feel cared for and loved while the jokes and eating on the couch with my family made me feel right at home. I am feeling bittersweet about meeting all of these wonderful people, and mostly I am hoping that our paths cross again.
