Get involved!!! There are countless opportunities to travel on weekends and sometimes during the week, but you are in a new community. Embrace it. Learn about the people who live there. Join some clubs(Tramping…). Trivia nights (not only good for free drinks) taught me a lot about New Zealand. Go to random events(plenty are free). Sign up for FUN classes (i.e. Swing Dancing just saying).
Service abroad. You can do it while taking classes, depending on where you travel to. I may be biased, but I highly recommend it, especially if you feel like you have some free time. You don’t have to take an official position to be involved. Some of the strongest relationships I created here are through the organization I volunteered with. You see another area that you’re probably not exposed to in classes, bars or even traveling around and having fun all the time. It really helps you understand your community better and even though culturally, you may experience different things, people are still people and the people of New Zealand are more than happy to welcome those eager to be a part of the culture.
p.s. The international office would love to help you get involved.
