The first few weeks living in London have been an absolute whirlwind! Every day I learn, see, or experience something for the first time; this city is just so alive and it’s thrilling to be a part of. Some people consider this the “honeymoon phase” of being here- everything is great, no cares in the world. I, however, am a very realistic person and if there were something wrong, I know I could spot it right from the start. There is a bit of an adjustment period, but I’ve dreamt of living in a big city for so long, I’m overjoyed to be here!
During the first week, I began my finance internship at The Langham Hotel. Europe’s first “grand hotel”, The Langham is located in Oxford Circus and services many celebrities, heads of state, you name it. I work in the cost control department, and I’m really enjoying myself. This is my first time working in a real office setting, and I can definitely see myself doing something like this in the future!
While I work and take classes for eight hours a day, four days a week, my favorite part of being here is the traveling and exploring. Any time I have time to spare, I usually pick a tube stop I haven’t gotten off at before and explore what’s there. Just last week, I got off of work early and I went to Covent Garden for the first time- what a lovely place to be! It’s a small shopping center with street performers and is in a gorgeous area of town. Definitely an area I plan to return to in the future.
There’s never a dull moment in London, and I’m really starting to see that now. For example, there was a concert in the Natural History Museum last night, and the premiere of Zoolander 2 in Leicester Square tonight! Throw celebrity sightings in the mix of royal family spottings and sold-out football (soccer!) matches, London surely keeps you on your toes. I can’t wait to see what the next few weeks hold!
