A few weekends ago, a friend and I drove to the west coast of the Southern Island of New Zealand where we camped in Te Anau, and then traveled to Millford Sound the next day. We had horrible rainy weather the entire time, but it made for some of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. As we drove the beautiful three hour drive from Te Anau to Millford Sound, I was astounded at the beautiful scenery. The big, majestic Southern Alps seemed to come out of the sky as they went beyond the clouds. Never in my life had I ever witnessed such amazing mountains.
The drive was three long hours of steep hills, narrow roads, tunnels through mountains, iron bridges, and one-way roads; but the scenery was totally worth it. With all of the rain, it seemed as if mile-long waterfalls were just gushing down the mountains and into the sound. Occasionally, the sun would peak through the clouds and the rain would let up for a short period, exposing astonishing rainbows that seemed to come out of the sky and go into the Southern Alps. The weekend I spent in Millford Sound was certainly a weekend I’ll never forget.
