I really love learning about religious tradition, especially when it borders on the folkloric, so I was mesmerized by the story of Saint Mary’s visit to the Cathedral of Toledo. According to tradition, the Virgin came down to honor a priest who had sacrificed his cloak to the needy, gifting him with a hand-embroidered robe. In the hundreds of years since, the Cathedral has become a monument to Mary and this moment, featuring several visual depictions of this story and a place of reverence for the rock she herself touched while in Toledo. A stunning ceiling fresco in a side gallery offers this detail, my favorite portrayal of Mary for the soft colors and her expression of serenity. I found the ages-old honor for the Cathedral’s defining account to be very moving, and am so glad to have seen so many beautiful representations of the Saint.
