Remember that time my flight got cancelled on my way back from Barcelona? Let’s back up a little.
Last weekend I took a trip with two friends to Barcelona and all I can say is Barcelona has stolen a piece of my heart. The city is incredible! Saturday we walked almost 11 miles touring the city. By the end of the day my feet were killing me, but it was worth it because we saw everything we wanted to and more. We hit all of the famous Gaudi sites: La Sagrada Familia, Casa Milá, Casa Batlló and Park Gūell. La Sagrada Familia was by far the most impressive, but my personal favorite was Casa Batlló (left).
We just happened to be there during a huge festival called La Mercé, which is a celebration that says goodbye to the summer and welcomes the months of fall. As part of the festival, Saturday night we saw a parade down La Rambla filled with mythical creatures, dragons, and bands.
Other points of interest:
While we didn’t swim, the Barcelona beach is amazing.
You can go multiple places to see an excellent view of the city. We went to Tibidabo and could see all of Barcelona, right to the ocean.
I found out that Picasso did more than just Cubism. And yes, all of his work at the Picasso Museum is fantastic.
Getting lost in the Gothic Quarter is one of the coolest experiences. Walking all of the small alleys and wandering into the unique shops was one of my favorite adventures in Barcelona.
And now we come to the end of our adventure… or I guess the beginning of a new one. Sunday night our flight back to Oviedo was cancelled because of a freak electrical storm. After waiting in the airport for about two hours, we finally got a new flight, but not to Oviedo. The only flight they had available was to Bilbao and then a three hour bus from Bilbao to Oviedo. While I was exhausted and grumpy and wanted badly to be back in my new home, it was just another part of the adventure of traveling. The good news is the hotel the airline gave us was probably the nicest I had ever stayed in and I took full advantage. I may have stolen a few bottles of shampoo for compensation 😉
I had my last class today at Centro Britannica and it’s off to Málaga and Granada for the long weekend before I start at the University of Oviedo on Monday!
