Joining the volleyball club has been the most impactful part of my adventure. Not only do I get to play a sport I enjoy but I have met some very wonderful people. My first day at volleyball practice I met Katie; a genuinely down-hearted girl who expects the best in people. She is far more concerned for the well-being of others than anyone I have ever met. She is smart and beautiful and excels at anything she sets her mind to. In December I am going with her to London and I can not wait. Soon after I met Meghan who spells her name exactly like me unusually. She is the quieter one of the group I would say. But she waits for her time to speak wisely. I certainly enjoy her company. And like me, she tries her best to help the rest of the team do well at games. She is also very focused and works on papers more than she hangs out with us, unfortunately. Later on I met Christine. She is also a very compassionate person with consideration for others. She has done so much travelling since she hasn’t gotten here which I envy greatly. She also seems to carefully think about her words before she speaks and I don’t believe I have ever really heard her say a negative comment about anyone else. Then there is our 5 and 3/4 ft setter, Mckenzie. She is amazing at volleyball. And she is certainly not afraid of getting hurt. Between Katie and Mckenzie, I have never seen anyone play a sport with such passion. The most shocking fact about Mckenzie is that she is from Hawaii yet has never had a pineapple. And once she is comfortable with a group she is not afraid of talking, and she is full of endless stories. Then I met Bobby, a ginger kid everyone thought was Irish. He is in most of my classes, then I saw him in volleyball. It took a while before Bobby became a part of the group. However, it wasn’t until we started talking to Bobby that we all started hanging out. We have done numerous movie nights, dinners, game nights, we even have done some travelling together. We went to Dublin and Cork. Later on we met Sean. He is very tall and definitely good at volleyball. He is also on the quieter side but I think he just enjoys listening to others. All of these people have helped passed the time. It is difficult going from working, school, and commuting twenty four seven to having so much free time. However, now that we all have been hanging out so much I am certainly going to miss them.
Also this past week was Thanksgiving. On Tuesday our volleyball coach prepared us a wonderful meal. He made turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, mixed veggies, and roasted potatoes. The meal was very good and he even sent us home with leftovers. Which I have been consuming all week. Then on Thursday, Bobby and I went to play flag football with the American football club. We had a great time. I even scored 2 touch downs. It was fun getting to throw around a football. Then after volleyball I was invited to another Thanksgiving dinner with one of Katie’s friends. The one dish I was most excited about was green bean casserole. After dinner Bobby and I joined some other members of the American football club to watch the Redskins vs. the Cowboys at the Student Union. I certainly miss football. Overall I would say my Thanksgiving week was one for the books!
