As a part of my study abroad program here in Hong Kong, I was asked to reflect on how my identity influences my experience of the world. Well, to begin, it is a little bit difficult to define my identity. I am a student, I am a women, I am a sister, amongst many other traits that I could identify myself as. But I think what truly defines my experience of the world is how I choose to identify myself with others and the decisions that I make as a result. There is no denying that diversity exists around every corner. Each individual has their own perspective and set of values that shapes how they experience the world and the decisions that they make on a daily basis. But for me, what is important is to recognize these differences. It is important to recognize that my identity, how I choose to portray myself, is different from those that I may encounter abroad. And these differences in values, in perspectives, in culture are bound to have an influence on the relationships that I create. For me, this is what makes the study abroad experience so wonderful. I am able to see a glimpse of how others view the world and try to relate their perspectives to my own. I will try to remain respectful, keep an open attitude, and remember how cultural differences may influence my interactions with others. At times I feel like it may be a challenge, but it is all part of the adventure.
