Spring Break!
Maddy, Brandon, and I are headed to the Cook Islands! If it were a straight shot its only 2,387 miles away, but instead we are driving to Christchurch, flying to Auckland, then flying to Rarotonga, a pretty long journey, nut definitely worth it. After Maddy and I were got deboarded from our flight (in a similar manner to the guy from United) we finally got to Rarotonga. The Rarotonga Backpackers which we were staying at where we had a beach hut rented out had thought we were a no show and booked our room over us so we were forced to sleep on the futons in some of the muggiest weather I’ve ever experienced. It may sound like things were not going to plan at this point, which is true, but we were having a great time. The next day we rented scooters and rode around the island, which is only 32km in circumference, in about 45 minutes! We checked into our airbnb, an awesome white cottage thirty feet from the beach and started driving around the island looking to book scuba dives. We ended up booking three dives that week expecting at least one to be canceled because of the outskirts of Cyclone Cook which has left some dragging rain and ugly weather. But no dives were canceled and they ended up being some of the best dives of my life. The Avavaro passage was incredible, diving with 8 white tip sharks and swimming under a school of 50+ eagle rays was a once in a lifetime dive. The current was so strong we had to be negatively buoyant and rock climb on the bottom of the ocean to conserve our air. It was one of the best dives ive ever done.
