A couple weeks ago we stayed in Candelario for the weekend. I have never heard of this place before coming on this trip. It was a three hour bus ride to the small town from Madrid. After we checked into our hotel there, we all took a walking tour throughout the town. Candelario was so unique and pretty, I have never seen a place like it before. There are many water fountains located throughout the town that are completely safe to drink from too. This was such an interesting addition to this town as the water actually tasted well compared to tap water in the city. Candelario has a long history of making chorizo that most of the buildings here still have features from that production era. For example, many homes here still have an attic with many small windows which was used to dry out the meat. We were able to go to a museum that showed us what an original home that made chorizo looked like on the inside too. This was so interesting to walk through and learn how people used to live and work in this small town. The next day, we took a bus to a nearby town called Granadilla. No one actually lives in this town though. People will come and work there for the visitors or they camp there to help preserve the town’s historic buildings. There was one small castle in Granadilla and we were able to go up to the top of it. The view from the top was unreal, you were able to see all of the old town of Granadilla right next to the more modern buildings. This town and Candelario are both hidden gems in Spain that most people will never even know about. On the final day in Candelario, some of us made pottery with one of the locals. This was a neat souvenir to take back home. Overall, Candelario was a great experience and it was one of my favorites on this trip so far.
