My time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival was unique and immersive. Our class goal was to experience the festival and different cultures in areas of performance design. The city is old yet beautiful. It has so much history within its walls and cobblestone pathways. As a class, we spent a large amount of time learning about the city and country through our professors, an excursion to Stirling and the museums. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the oldest Fringe Festival celebrating their 70th anniversary this year. According to the locals, the population nearly doubles within the city during Fringe. While we do have a Fringe festival in Orlando, nothing compares to the one in Edinburgh. With the exception to theme parks, the majority of my past theatre experience was traditional, where the audience is separate from the performers. A large portion of the performances were not traditional at this Fringe. As an aspiring sound design, one of my favorite shows at the Fringe was called Seance. The show took place in a small dining room built in a shipping container at one of the venues. What made it so unique is it used only sound to tell the story. It was completely dark in the room throughout the entire performances. The sounds where highly detailed and realistic. As a audience member you were specially aware of the locations of the sound and the environment they were creating. At one moment, there is a voice that is right by your ear. It was highly realistic to were it could make your skin crawl. As a young sound designer, it is inspiring to see so much love and talent put into a performance completely within my field of study. It gives me something to look forward too as a future designer. The trip pushed me outside my comfort zone to a point where I saw shows I might not have seen of my own accord. The includes the immersive performance of Trainspotting Live to the dark performance of Evocation completely with puppets. As I sit and reflect upon my time spent in Edinburgh, there are moments where I wish I had more time to delve further into the culture and theatre. I miss the energy that flowed through the city once the festival began. This trip was an amazing experience which has inspired me and taught me so much. I hope to be able to experience the festival again in the future, but hopefully as a member of one of shows.
