Oh, the life in Oviedo, Spain. I am starting to really get my barrings here in Oviedo as I am beginning to finally start feeling confident when speaking Spanish with other students, teachers and locals. The life here is quaint because it is small enough to have a unique and different vibe, while also being big enough of a place to where I am never finding myself very bored. Me, and another Rollins student (we are the only two), just received our conversation partners last week where we will be speaking with local students to practice while we are also going to help them with their English as they are studying it here at the local university. This will help us a lot where we can get to meet more locals and get to learn the culture as well as the slang here in Northern Spain. We took a trip last week for my 21st birthday to Lisbon which I found to be a city that has a lot more to offer than I thought. The city reminded me a lot of San Francisco as there was tram cars going throughout the streets and neighborhoods of Lisboa. There were rolling hills as well as a look-alike Golden Gate Bridge. We spent my birthday going to the town of Sintra where we went and saw a very well-known castle that is a bit more modern then very typical medieval castles. But, I have to admit I would have to say my favorite part of the trip was when we sat and watched the sunset near the water while there was a man behind us playing ‘Fado’. Fado is a typical style of music which is from a few generations ago. I would highly recommend going to Lisbon at some point because I believe that it is going to be the new ‘it’ destination in Europe for young people because of how cheap, yet beautiful it is.
