Hey everyone!
It’s Manny again. I am finally back home in the warm and sunny Miami. The program is over, summer is here, and I am super ready to relax! I never realized how much I missed the torrential rains of Florida and, you know, the sun. After three months in London, one tends to forget that the sun even exists, since it is almost always cloudy and rainy over there. But no matter, now I get to bask in this glorious sunshine! I think it is a worthy reward for all the hard work put into this past semester.
Speaking of work, I guess I should reflect on lessons learned and what to take from my internship. After all, it is important I do this so that I can apply it to my future career! To begin with, I would have to say that I came out learning more about what my work habits are and how they can be both negatives and positives. For one, I was always commended on how quickly I would get a job done and how efficiently it would be completed. I would also be applauded for how quickly I soaked in information and learned new things for work. This allowed me to become autonomous very quickly and I was able to experiment with different elements of the work without needing to much clarification. On the other hand, by working so fast I also tended to leave gaps and make stupid mistakes. Simple things such as forwarding an important email to someone else on the team were completely missed since I was so focused on getting the task done. Normally, a one-off mistake is nothing to get to worked up about. However, it really becomes an issue when they start to pile up and the cracks become noticeable. So I will definitely have to keep this in mind going into the future as well as constantly work to improve this.
Second, I guess would also say that I learned how to manage priorities and effectively task myself without getting overloaded on work. I consider this to be the most important thing I learned coming out of this program. Since this will be a skill I will use in almost any aspect of work and school, and even in life, I am very glad I was able to start to develop this newfound skill. It is almost like learning about theatre and the arts. One does not realize it, but acting and improvisation are a part of our daily lives. It never ever goes away and it is something that we are constantly practicing, only taking a break from it when we are on our own. I guess that just speaks to modern society and how certain skills and aspects are just universal, no matter exclusive a particular field of study or career might be.
Well, that’s it then. I could bore you guys with all the technical aspects I’ve learned in marketing but I don’t think anyone wants to hear that (unless you’re a Communication Major. Shout out!). Peace and love everyone! I hope you guys enjoyed reading about my travels as much as I’ve enjoyed writing about them. Have a safe summer, and I’ll see you all in the fall.
