While studying abroad during the Verano Español program, my classmates and I had the opportunity to attend a bullfight at La Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas. Before coming to Spain, bullfighting was one of the cultural activities that I was particularly excited about seeing since it is such a controversial and unique contest that is unlike any other. Though the ultimate goal of killing the bull can be very disturbing to many, it was exhilarating to watch a contest between a human and a beast. Additionally, there was a sense of respect for the animals that cannot be understood unless one attends this event. The crowd roared for the bull when it was able to defend itself and when the bull is finally put to rest, its body is used for all purposes. I would not recommend this event to those who have a weak stomach, but for those who are trying to get out of their comfort zone a bit and immerse themselves in a Spanish tradition, I highly recommend attending a bullfight.
