I hope to use these qualities as a tool to better myself as a well-rounded individual while in Athens this semester. My identity does have both its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages help define who I am today, while the disadvantages offer a chance to improve on what can help me become a more experienced person. Although I’m familiar with the Greek language, learning more about it will strengthen my ability to converse with people in Greece.
While abroad, I hope to be exposed to opportunities such as being more socially involved, becoming engaged with the Grecian culture, and making the most of my time abroad. Having more social skills will help not just with getting around Athens but engaging in what the culture has to offer. I’ve always been fascinated with learning more about Greece and its rich history. Notable events are Greek Mythology, when the 300 Spartans fought to the death against the Persians, and the importance of OXI Day.
When the topic of mythology is discussed, mostly Grecian tales are told. A good amount of people are familiar with the three big-named gods: Zeus, God of the Heavens, Poseidon, God of the Oceans, and Hades, God of the Underworld. In Ancient Greece, mythology was the main belief and Gods were shown the highest respect and praise. Although modern day citizens of Greece might not believe in the Greek Mythology, they are surrounded by sculptures and depictions of the mythological figures on national monuments and landmarks. It’s merely seen as a statement of how much people thought highly of those Gods at one point in time.
Since I was a kid, the story of how the 300 Spartans shows how much those soldiers believed how Sparta, along with Athens, should not give in to the Persians who wanted to conquer them. The Spartans sacrificed their lives because of that belief, and by doing so, is remembered as one of the remarkable, well-known, brave actions in Greece’s history.
Lastly, OXI Day happened fair more recently than Greek Mythology and the 300 Spartans. During World War II, on October 28th, 1940, the Grecian Prime Minister, General Metaxas rejected an ultimatum presented by Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini. The demand stated to allow the passage of Axis forces to enter Greece and use certain strategic locations that weren’t disclosed, or Greece would have to face a war. Metaxas simply replied with one word…OXI! In Greek, “Oxi” means No. The repercussions of the one worded response lead to a Greco-Italian War between Greece and Italy. However, the aftermath of the war made Greece stand out the most. They stood up for what they believed in and not having anyone else push them around. The Greeks stood their ground and made sure that OXI Day would never be forgotten throughout history.
In the end, all cultures have different norms and ideals. My ideals and beliefs might differ from what is acceptable in the Greek culture. I hope to be courteous and respectful in my approach to these changes. Some advantages are the people being open to change in customs and adapting to some amount of change. On the other hand, the disadvantages could be not being open to change and by sticking to their firm beliefs and customs.
