I’ve officially been in Oviedo for over two weeks! In all honesty, it feels like time has gone by very quickly, and I think part of the reason for that is the fact that my parents flew here with me. Since they left on September 15th, I haven’t felt alone just yet. I was lucky enough to arrive in the city just in time for las Fiestas de San Mateo, which were a week of amazing food, good music, and fun memories with Jade! I was able to experience the culture of Asturias, while also staying in touch with my own, since there was Cuban food and drinks available all week, a parade based on Latin America, and music like salsa, bachata, and reggaetón.
Las fiestas ended this past Saturday, and left me sick with a throat infection. Gross, I know! I was obligated to see a doctor, who prescribed me antibiotics. My throat hurt so badly that I missed two days of class, and was basically stuck in bed, which was rough for me because I’m siempre en la calle! But anyways, being sick abroad without my parents to baby me or my dog to comfort me was a little upsetting. Thankfully, my host mom was constantly checking up on me and making me tea to ease the pain. This whole situation served as a reminder of what my priorities are, and how I should always prioritize my physical and mental health. My body is obviously not used to being up until 6AM partying, eating at random times throughout the night, and walking as much as I do here. I’m grateful that I was able to be here during San Mateo, but I’m relieved to finally be starting a “normal” routine.
Normal will have to wait a couple more days though, since I’m currently at the airport again, this time waiting for my flight to Tenerife! I decided to make this my first trip because the rest of my classes don’t begin until Wednesday, which gives me a long weekend. I also happen to have family in Tenerife, and I think spending some time with them will help me recover quicker. I’m hoping the rest of this semester is as eventful as these past two and a half weeks have been. The ups, the downs, I’m ready for it all!
