I landed in London a little over a month ago. This is officially the longest I’ve been away from home and it feels very weird but very exciting. I love London and everywhere in the surrounding area that I’ve been so far has been a wonderful adventure. I’ve been to Stonehenge, Bath, Greenwich, and Coventry as well as just around this beautiful city I’m calling home for the next three months. I am living in Camden, a very young and upcoming area, above a goth pub so I can hear the parties and loud street noise almost every night. It can be annoying but also comforting because it sounds like my room back in Sutton above the loud front door.
I think I’ve gotten to the point where I’ve adjusted to being here because I’m tired all the time, the fun and excitement that overpowered everything else has passed. My supervisor at my internship and everyone at CAPA are amazing at helping to make sure I am always doing new and exciting things even if it’s just a new project at work instead of the one I’ve been working on the past few days.
My internship is an experience I was both looking forward to and apprehensive about. I am at an opera company and I coming in I didn’t know anything about opera or really like what I did know that much. As a theatre major, I have respect for it as an art form and what it has done to help theatre start back up after the dark ages, but I also had the impression it was for people like my grandparents. Throughout my last month working with them I had learned a lot about the art and although it is still definitely not my favorite I do like it much more having seen a live performance and the amount of work that goes into putting on an opera.
