Preparing for departure to live in a never-visited and different country has produced mixed emotions– excitement and curiosity mainly. Will I understand the language? Will it be too hot? Will I like it? How are the people? Is the food as good as they say?.. these are all questions that have overwhelmed me moments before arriving. It is not a lie that adapting to a new home is not easy but creates a fun experience.
Meditating on the purpose of why I decided to study abroad makes this experience all more exciting! When I decided to study abroad I knew I would choose a program that would offer the best courses for my learning experience. I chose the program in Rome, Italy because it was that program that I knew could best fulfill this purpose. Besides my learning experience, I am excited to learn a different language and enjoy a different culture.
It is not surprising or weird to say that the European culture is much different from the American. The first difference in culture that is a shock, is the style of living, referring to the AC. Before visiting Europe for the first time years ago I always imagined every part of the world to have the convenience of AC everywhere. I was quickly in shock and dissapointed that it was not so. On the other day, life in Europe seems much calm then the hectic, on-the-go American life. An interesting part of this program is that I will get to see for myself what the Italian culture is like. Something I am not expecting to adapt to is the coffee culture! Definitely not. In Rome, unfortunately there is no Starbucks, and according to a marketing professor it is because it did not succeed since Italians were not a fan of quick coffee and especially the style of Starbucks. The fact that Italians don’t drink coffee with milk after 11 am is scary to me, because on a long study day I intend to survive on a caffe latte! However, I’m sure the amazing food and substitute drinks will diminish the impact from coffee. The food is an amazing part of Italy that I am looking forward to!
Most of all, I am excited to learn news topics in my major in a different country and observe a different culture while doing so that most definitely will be reflected in all aspects of the daily Italian life. This is taking into account the teaching styles of professors. Overall, I am looking forward to a wonderful experience and great semester!
