Since learning about “The U-Curve of Cultural Adjustment,” I have definitely recognized moments where I have faced Cultural Confrontation during my time so far in Athens, and other areas I have explored in Greece. These experiences have more overall positive in pushing me outside of my comfort zone and experience a different lifestyle than what I am used to. One of the biggest adjustments I have had to make with Greek culture is the slower paced atmosphere, especially in restaurants and food service. During many trips, I have noticed that when going to restaurants, service is much slower than in America, and it is expected to be sitting for a couple of hours to eat. The food takes slower as well as the check. Initially, this had cause anxiety in time management and scheduling, however, has taught me to improve on these skills and slow my brian down a bit. This has positively impacted me as it has taught me to be more present in the moment and not rush my activities, such as eating. Overall, I feel much more relaxed and have been able to slow down many other aspects of my life. I take more time walking around, exploring Athens, and spending more time with friends when going out to eat. The culture surrounding food has changed significantly for me. I value my time spent eating at restaurants and cafes much more than I had used to, as I am there for socializing more so than I am there to eat. It has become one of my favorites ways to connect with others and get work done as well.
