The United States has many freedoms, one being able to congregate in local parks and recreation areas without permits. These activities may include barbecues, sports events, music events, swimming in local lakes, beach activities and picnics. Our freedom to come and go without restrictions as Americans is the most precious aspect of our culture. Most of the time this can go without incident and is quite enjoyable. However, sometimes with large groups of diverse people sharing the same space, some may feel certain activities or behaviors infringe on others values or beliefs. Such as loud, inappropriate music, cleanliness, littering, invading personal space, dressing inappropriately in public, inappropriate displays of affection, smoking, drinking or any other drug use. Although I believe everyone has the right to enjoy the outdoors and activities. As Americans we do not have restrictions as long as it is legal and peaceful. Americans enjoy many outdoor social activities and we do have laws to deflect abuse of alcohol, drugs or aggressive behavior.
I do believe people need to be more respectful of their surroundings and how their behavior is affecting others around them. Being more conservative myself, I believe some aspects of American culture regarding dress and display of affection or drug use in public should be restricted . I believe our culture can be viewed sometimes as selfish and self absorbed, possibly borderline disrespectful for some.
I believe any person from outside the United States would find some of our freedoms to be either offensive or enjoyable, depending on which country, nationality or religion a person practices. People from the Middle East may find certain aspects, such as swimwear on our beaches in the United States to be suggestive, yet in France or Brazil it may be to conservative. In China some music has been banned due to offensive and vulgar language in the lyrics. Iran does not allow hip hop or any kind of ceremonial dance. Sticking with certain religious groups such as Jewish, Muslims and Christians faiths I do not think their values would align with some American freedoms but that is the idea of tolerance Americans pursue. In Spanish and Indian culture I believe they would love the freedom to play loud music and dance since it is a big part of their culture. Now that we are moving on from COVID 19 lock downs I believe all would appreciate the celebrations and freedoms of outdoor social gatherings and activities.
During my research for Japan, I noticed one of the rules on campus regarding use of the local parks required; for example no fires, noise ordinances, all garbage is to be taken with you, no smoking, and music is not allowed to be played loudly in regards to certain decibels due to the surrounding homes. Quiet hours are also listed as 10 pm to 5 am. Also visible tattoos must be covered in certain places because it can be associated with the Yakuza. Moreover, types of clothing that show the thighs are prohibited.I have my ear buds and I will be leaving my Shorts Home….I am looking forward to my adventure and experience.
