- The older I have gotten, the more independent I have gotten, the more I have become a witness to and understood American culture. One aspect that I have recognized is the pattern of self centrism. There is this idea that Americans believe they know what is right for every person, this belief of being the positive influence in everyone’s story, but really the reasoning is derived from self interest in gratifying the mind instead of actually being open minded. So many people believe they know what is best but I have come to realize, actually struggle to see outside just themselves, but instead other peoples wants and needs. There is an competitive air to the country that breathes to people outside the country that one belief is better than the other.
- I believe that in this self centrism reality, there should be more of a collaborative point of view, based off of civil discussion and disagreement and henceforth reaching an agreement or compromise. Otherwise, it is limiting and prohibiting to the majority of the nation, making the mass of its people feel as though their voices aren’t heard and inhibiting the ability for the nation to truly grow, not where it is most important. One person should not swoop in and become the person who can fix all by forcing their ideas into another’s mind, whether it be on a small scale, such as a friend and a their other friend, or someone with mass authority onto a portion of the nation’s people. Especially if the reality of the outcome is this person solely gaining from it.
- Someone from outside this country I believe would be strongly against it but also understand. This idea that one is right and the other is wrong is not a new concept, not even just nation wide, but world wide. I think most people around the world would agree that it is it not in everyone’s best interest to think like this. However, when it comes to America, I feel as though people looking on the outside might view it as something almost childish, as if we have all of these other issues, issues with urgency, that need to be solved, but half are too busy trying to convince the other they are entirely in the right to actually come to a solution.
- I feel as though this exercise prepares me for what I am to come across in France because I feel like this might be a nice change of pace as I will be learning a new culture and a new language and I won’t have anyone telling me that how I am doing is right or wrong, but only gently guiding me in the correct direction, allowing me to immerse myself and learn on my own.
