There are many different aspects of culture and many things that could be compared between the United States of America and Spain. I have already done a similar prompt as I went to Spain this past summer for Verano Español. One thing that I talked about previously was transportation. I am not sure if Oviedo has the metro like Madrid did but I am sure it is a walkable place. It was really nice to be able to get all around the city on foot. I enjoyed walking everywhere, especially since the sun did not set until late. The United States of America has mostly cars as its form of transportation. I enjoy driving, but driving is often the only choice. I was told I would be culture shocked when going to Spain for the first time. However, I think the bigger surprise is when you return. It was weird to drive again after not driving for a while and also weird to return to my smaller town where many things are at least a 20 minute drive away. It made me really think about public transportation and how it was so different in Florida. The elementary school near my house actually got rid of its bus system which left all kids living outside walking distance needing a car pickup to get home. This stands out as the negative environment of that is made much greater. If putting environmental transportation was more of a priority the bus system would never have been removed completely. Another cultural aspect was how everything seems to move much faster in the United States of America. Time flies very quickly as opposed to days in Spain that were much longer and slower paced. I think it has to do where the priorities of the people lie. I really enjoyed how long the days felt. I am very excited to see how life in Oviedo differs from Spanish city life. It will be inspiring to see how transportation is different and if daily life works differently there. I am sure I will be culture shocked again when returning to Florida. Perspective is definitely important when assimilating as it affects how well you will adapt to the change. I hope to practice letting go and embracing my time in Oviedo. This exercise allows students to look at themselves and think about their own culture and bias in relation to other cultures around the world. It is important to think about what your perspective is and how it may be affecting your experience. If you go with an open mind after reflection on your culture and the culture you are entering you are better able to create a more positive experience for yourself. This practice can be used in many situations as it is the practice of preparing yourself for the changes that are coming and allowing yourself to process them. I am excited to this journey and to learn about the culture of Oviedo and make some lasting positive memories.
