- When I think of culture in the United States, I think of opportunity. Growing up, whether it was school, sports, or simply hanging out with friends, there was always opportunity in some shape or form. I understand that some people have less opportunity than others financially, but regardless, I would say that we all have much more opportunity around us than we realize. It can be as simple as the opportunity to make someone’s day better. The sky is the limit. For any passion that a person holds, America offers at least some amount of opportunity so that an individual can pursue what they love to do. Of course, opportunity is nothing without self-application and discipline which is emphasized in America’s culture.
- I love this aspect of U.S. culture. As a student at Rollins, I consider myself extremely blessed in the realm of opportunity. Rollins offers an unimaginable amount of opportunity. It brings students from all around the world to connect and learn with each other in one place. As much as I benefit from the academics and sports at Rollins, it comes nothing in comparison to the benefit I have gotten from the people around me. I have made so many friends from all around the world, and we have grown and learned together. Aside from simply enjoying having these people in life, I enjoy the idea that the future holds a lot of opportunity for my friends and I to create beautiful things in the world. America offers the opportunity to change the world for the better. HOWEVER, there is just as much, if not more, opportunity to create negativity in the U.S. Opportunity is precious, therefore it must be protected within the right hands.
- I believe someone from outside the United States would greatly appreciate this aspect of U.S. culture. Opportunity is a huge reason why people desire living in the United States. If you Google “Why do people move to the United States?”, almost every answer is opportunity of some sort. For example, my father, who was originally born in Former Yugoslavia, moved to the United States. Of course, the main reason was due to the war, but he chose America specifically because it had the most opportunity for his career. He then met my mom and the rest is history. I think the type of opportunity that is most sought after in America is opportunity in a career, and this is great but there is way too much opportunity in America to only focus on this type. The amount of creativity and passion in America is noteworthy, and this kind of opportunity is the most fulfilling.
- Now that I am going to be studying in Oviedo, Spain for a whole semester, this exercise makes me curious as to what opportunities will open up for me while I’m abroad. What people will I get closest to? What experiences will be the most memorable? What new hobbies or passions will I develop? Opportunity is everywhere, I just need to keep an eye out for it. For now, I have no idea what opportunities will come, but I’m going to make sure I’m paying attention when they come.
