Hi again! Going a little backwards now as I talk about my orientation week, but also really enjoying this reflection time. As I was a little weary of having to leave so early for Newcastle, July 9, when school started the 30th, it was the greatest experience. A week in Cairns was included in the TEAN Abroad program before the semester commenced. Here we had a taste of freedom, adventure, and friendship. Within my first 3 days in Australia I was diving in the Great Barrier Reef! It was so nice to have this organized and also to meet all of the other students traveling from the States to different Universities in Australia. A few ones whom which now go to the same Uni as me in Newcastle. Once again, I never quite felt alone once I left the plane in Florida. I am still incredibly thankful for the easy transition. The Uni of Newcastle started 2 weeks after Cairns so the orientation also gave us plenty of time to get situated into Uni life before classes started. It was quiet and nice as the domestic students were still on break here and the other internationals hadn’t moved in yet. Me and a few other American students from TEAN got to explore the city on our own and become familiar with our new home. It was also nice as we got to show the other internationals around once they got here 2 weeks later, making them feel just as welcomed as we had from the beginning. Now as the semester is closing soon, I am hearing lots of talk about travel plans. Because Cairns is an ideal holiday spot many international students want to make it there before their VISA ends. It is quite north so I am thankful I can now prioritize other travel after exams. TEAN also schedules many other events throughout the semester to help you get integrated into the Aussie community. For example I attended the local rugby league game, went whale watching, had surf lessons, and got a private tour of the Sydney Opera House. I think I am a local now? Up next is free desert catch up before exams- I don’t think I could think of anything better. Thanks TEAN for an amazing program!
