Through my history classes I have learned about the war but what I really like about this book is that is gives diary entries and has people talking about their experiences. For example, I failed to think about the civilians living in Berlin and the air raids and how it affected people that were simply just trying to live their life. I could never image hearing alarms and being forced to run into a basement and hearing bombs being dropped on the city that I love or the Capital. I think that war is usually looked at as a whole of who won or who lost but I think it is important to remember the people that had to live through it and remember those who did not make it.
The civilian perspective during the war is quite interesting indeed. I’d honestly rather see films about the air raids and how it affected everyone in Berlin and London. Wouldn’t it be interesting to have a film or even a published diary about growing up during this period?
I’ve thought about this a lot when it comes to my character for my autobiography. My character is named Edith and is 10 years old in 1939. So I’m extremely interested to how this was weaved into my story.
