These are pictures of cherry blossoms, called sakura in Japan, which hold a lot of significance in Japanese culture. They bloom in the spring and therefore, in Japan, symbolize a time of renewal. They only bloom for about two weeks then the blossoms start to fall and in Japan this symbolizes the fleeting nature of life. During the cherry blossoms season Japanese people get together to have hanamis, a tradition going back hundreds of years, where Japanese people meet with their co-workers, friends and family in a potluck style party. It is seen as a chance for people to bond and meet new friends, forming new relationships. The cherry blossoms create a very romantic atmosphere and so some couples go to viewing spots to see the cherry blossoms in what is called yozakura, which is essentially hanami at night. The Japanese fiscal as well as school year also starts in April coinciding with sakura season and symbolizing as well as welcoming in a brand-new start. My friend and I saw these blossoms in Tokyo over our spring break and the bloom of the cherry blossoms changed the energy of the whole city, everyone was more excited, more energetic and happier. It was a beautiful thing to experience <3
