My character is a sixteen year old German-Jewish boy named Kristof Block. His parents own a bakery in Nuremberg. Tall, dark hair, socially awkward, and introverted the outbreak of the war has caused this teenager to retreat further into his family and diary. Highly intelligent, he is acutely aware of the dangers that surround he and his family. Kristallnacht was a solidifying event for Kristof that Europe was no longer safe for the Jews.
The story that I want to tell is one that highlights the difficulties of coming of age in a war zone and under a politically oppressive regime. The story isn’t going to be strictly about the war, or rather not strictly a political narrative. I do believe to add depth and dimension to him it’s important to add additional characters such as friends, outside family, and maybe even a romantic interest. I do know where I want this story to end up, it’s simply a matter of filling in the middle.
Throughout this trip, I hope to be able to further develop Kristof and see where I can take his story.
