Berliners were told so many times that I’m sure they were convinced Berlin was the best defended city in WWII. Whether this is true or not is up for debate. What we do know is that Berlin did indeed have some considerable defenses against air raids throughout the war. The most prominent of these were the flak towers. Massive structures, these towers were impressive with how large a concrete structure they were, standing out against the surrounding neighborhoods. Just looking at them, you can tell they were meant for defensive purposes.
They weren’t they only measures Berlin took against air raids, however. Most of the work was done by crews consisting of citizens, a few soldiers, and POWs. Their line of defense for the city consisted of radar equipemtn, searchlights, and antiaircraft guns. The most notable and infamous of these was the “acht-acht” 88mm with recoil tubes and a tapering barrel.
This would be a strong visual reinforcement for Berliners assessing their city’s safety.
