I’m working on a research project during my semester here in Munich and I’m researching choirs in Munich. I’m participating in a choir, visiting choir rehearsals and attending concerts to observe the culture through music. Thursday evening I attended the Munich Bach Choir’s concert of Marienvesper from Claudio Monteverdi. I was really excited to attend this concert, I went alone and really enjoyed the experience on my own. The concert was inside one of the most beautiful churches in Munich- St. Micheals Kirche, an early baroque style church. This was a really neat experience for me because I sing in the Bach Choir of Winter Park so it was neat to observe the differences. I am extremely jealous that they are able to perform in such beautiful and historical places, it must be a truly awesome experience. One thing I was a little disappointed about is that they sang a vesper from the Middle Ages in a baroque church, when they could’ve enhanced the performance experience if they had performed this particular work in one of the older churches from the Middle Ages, such as the Frauenkirche. It was also a bit difficult to really hear the quality of the choirs sound because the sound was being swallowed by the dome in which they were located. I am really looking forward to visiting one of their rehearsals in about a week so I can really hear them. Otherwise, it was a really cool experience that I will always remember.
