Living in the United States, it is easy to forget that history goes beyond 1776. Here in Spain, however, I have been given the opportunity to learn about an ancient, distinct, and culturally mixed history. Today, a group of us visited Segovia, a little Roman town near Madrid. We saw its famous aqueduct, the cathedral, and the castle. It’s rumored that Walt Disney got his inspiration for Cinderella’s castle from the Alcázar of Segovia. As we toured the castle I couldn’t believe that I was walking through the same halls that Queen Isabella I had once walked. I think I may have even found my knight in shining armor. We finished the day by climbing 152 steps to the top of the castle’s tower and could look out for miles and miles on the city and the mountains in the distance.
I hope that wherever you find yourself this summer, you learn about the history that surrounds you. You never know, you may be surprised!
