Personal identities are an integral part of who we are, and they determine how we view the world within our sphere of experience. These identities are developed gradually over time, and they seem to become more static as we age. And although all our identities will modify the lenses through which we see the world, I believe that with intent and discipline it’s possible to temporarily relinquish the influence of an identity.
As I’m getting ready to leave for Spain, I’ve been putting some thought into what cultural and personal identities I hope to leave behind in the States. I’ve also been considering what new habits and identities I want to develop while abroad. One of the resolutions that I’ve made is actually the opposite of a plan, and that is to just go with the flow and be open to new experiences. I’m really looking forward to the journey toward personal development and growth that’s ahead of me and to meeting lots of new people along the way!
