Since its origin, The United States has been known for the value it holds in independence. The importance placed upon operating and acting independently as a country has trickled down into the independence of each individual separate from the others around them. This sense of individualism is one that is key to this country’s culture and identity, so much so that it is seen in many prominent symbols of our country, such as the Pledge of Allegiance. It is common to see people in America acting in ways that make them stand out and will set them apart from others. It is also common to see individuals behave in ways that will most benefit themselves rather than the whole of the community in which they live. It is my belief that it is a good thing to act independently and find ways to step outside a box that would make one the same as all the others; however, I believe there are also a lot of faults to this way of thinking and operating. Acting as an individual rather than for the whole can lead to selfish acts that risk the wellbeing of others simply for the benefit of oneself. It also goes against what many other countries in the world believe and value. Because of this, American views regarding individualism could be seen as a negative attribute more so than a positive one. As stated previously, it can be seen as selfish and that people rarely work for the good of the collective whole, which can also be seen as a hinderance to progress for all as this mindset often only allows true progress for a select privileged few. On the other hand, it could also be admired by those in other countries in certain circumstances. Individualism found in things such as art, performance, or innovation is often positive and inspiring for those in America and could also be seen as such from the perspective of other countries. Knowing, acknowledging, and understanding both sides of this coin will be important throughout ventures abroad for many reasons. One of which is simply the fact that knowing and understanding other’s perspectives on us and where we come from can be very beneficial and can help avoid misunderstandings with those who come from other countries and cultures. Knowing that many other countries place a great sense of importance in doing good for the whole rather than behaving in ways that only benefit oneself and/or make one stand apart can help to avoid awkward and possibly offensive acts while in countries with such beliefs. Also, knowing how we as Americans are perceived in other countries is equally as important so that we can be aware of some of the more negative perceptions so as to avoid doing things that may seem negative or disrespectful to those with those in other cultures with those perceptions. It never hurts to be as educated as possible on aspects of other counties as well as how those in those other countries see us as we explore their cultures throughout our time abroad so as to have the most beneficial, educational, and respectful study abroad experience possible.
