As I reflect upon U.S. culture, both the fast-paced lifestyle and larger scale of everything comes to mind. In America, people are constantly looking for how to do something in the fastest way possible, whether that be with fast food or technology. People are constantly on the go and prefer to accomplish things in the simplest way possible. In terms of scale, things are bigger with both intangible and tangible concepts. People dream bigger; food portions are bigger. People tend to have an unnecessary amount of material items. Overall, cities are more spread out. Our country, in general, is quite sizeable. Another major topic revolves around politics, which is fairly divided in terms of the political party system. People tend to be more reserved and aware of the company in which they are willing to discuss such topics to prevent discord.
I think America has really mastered the concept of convenience. I like to constantly be on the go and won’t complain if I can do something in a simpler fashion. At the same time, I think it is very important for certain things in life to be enjoyed. Taking the time to put maximum effort into something will usually prove to be worth it (food, arts, spending time outdoors, etc.). Personally, I think the majority of our portions are too big, which leads to unnecessary overindulgence. I do appreciate that America is so diverse, and you can find a bit of everything you are looking for. I think there is something for everyone, and anyone could find someone similar to them within the U.S. I like that some Americans are “go-getters,” but at the same time, this concept of the “American Dream” can be unrealistic and blown out of proportion. I have always been told I can grow up to become whoever I want to be and work any job I would like, which while I am forever grateful for the unlimited options and positivity, in some ways I feel lost and wish there was a bit more structure.
While I honestly don’t know how much truth there is to this concept, I have a view that Europeans generally don’t regard Americans highly in some ways. I think we can often be viewed as unrefined. There is a generalized stigma around Americans that revolves around being overweight and uncomplicated. Some would say we are overly friendly. I think someone from outside of U.S. culture would agree with my remarks on these cultural aspects, especially in terms of portions and exorbitance. On the other hand, I think this is very generalized, and Europeans know this is nothing more than a stereotype.
I have enjoyed thinking through these questions and reflecting on the culture I am used to as an American. Being aware of how one views themselves within their own culture is important before stepping into someone else’s space who might have a completely different view of the world. These questions have helped me process self-awareness. I have so much appreciation for the diversity of cultures and being able to share these differences when traveling to other countries. I can’t wait to see how London and Europe as a whole changes my perspective. Hopefully, I will learn from the locals and, in return, they will learn from me. I think the exchange of cultures is a special thing, and I feel very grateful to have the opportunity to do so.
Signing off for now. I can’t wait for my journeys abroad and to report back in a few weeks!
