American culture is a melting pot of various cultures from around the world, and it is known for its diversity. The United States has a population that is made up of immigrants from many different countries, which has greatly influenced the culture of the country. The culture is also heavily influenced by the indigenous peoples of the land and cultures from Africa, brought over by enslaved people.
In terms of values, Americans place a strong emphasis on individualism, freedom, and equality. The American Dream, the idea that through hard work and determination, anyone can achieve success and prosperity, is a fundamental aspect of American culture. Americans also value consumerism and materialism, as well as a strong work ethic. While in Italy, experiencing an emphasis on taking things slower in the workplace was weird at first, but in the end was very eye opening.
In terms of entertainment, Americans enjoy a wide variety of cultural activities, including music, film, theater, and sports. American popular music, such as rock and roll, hip-hop, and country, has a huge influence on the rest of the world. American film is also highly respected and influential, with Hollywood being one of the world’s major film production centers. American sports, such as football, baseball, and basketball, are also incredibly popular and influential. In Italy, of course everyone loves soccer, but I found that there was not too many people that followed other sports closely.
In terms of food, American cuisine is diverse and heavily influenced by other cultures. American staples include fast food, barbecue, and hamburgers, but there are also many regional specialties such as Tex-Mex, Cajun, and New England seafood. In Italy, I found that there was not much else offered besides Italian food. This was something that I found frustrating throughout my time abroad.
Overall, American culture is diverse, dynamic, and constantly evolving. It has been shaped by the many different people who have called America their home over the centuries, and it continues to be shaped by the influx of new immigrants every day. American culture is also heavily influenced by other cultures from around the world, making it a true melting pot of different customs, traditions, and values.
