To me, the most significant aspect of U.S. culture is our independence and drive. Since the birth of this nation, we have strived to carve out our own path. From the reliant British colonies, we were born from, to one of the greatest nations in the world today, the nation’s rise to success and influence has been led by fearless trailblazers, who dared to dream, what no one else could even imagine. As a nation, we have fought fiercely to ensure peace and prosperity not only within our own nation but across the globe as well. These attitudes and actions of self-reliance and determination are not found solely within our nation’s leaders but in nearly the entirety of American society as well. The American people have been pioneers, champions, trendsetters, heroes, and global leaders. Americans are always striving for success, and we often praise personal growth and achievement, in contrast to many nations which prioritize collectiveness. Quite simply, we live on our own terms and conditions, and we are whoever we dream to be. We’ve become our own royals, regardless of who either we or our descents were labeled as here or back in our nations of origin. We control our own destiny, and in the United States, I believe no man can take that away.
I believe this aspect of American culture is very inspiring. While I greatly believe in teamwork, I believe our individualistic culture and the American Dream allow us to be authentic, unique, and creative. To have the ability to make my dreams become a reality with enough hard work and commitment is amazing. Yes, I am constantly competing with others and facing many challenges, especially with my career and education, but that’s part of what makes me stronger. I know that our founding fathers and the countless others, who have fought for liberty and equality, throughout our history, have allowed for my fellow Americans and I to be truly free so that we can be ourselves.
I think there are many people who both criticize and admire this aspect of our culture. Many people believe competition is harsh and sometimes unforgiving and that sometimes freedoms can be taken too far, to the point where they harm others. Others believe that our idea of freedom provides them and their families the best quality of life, which is why America has the most immigration in the world. Although, critics and admirers alike both agree that the United States is one of the most diverse and influential countries in the world, and possibly will be for some time.
This exercise has helped me realize what makes me American and proud to be one. It will certainly aid in my personal identity abroad, and I hope that I can positively represent my nation in all the ways that make us great. I won’t just be just a foreigner, but a citizen of the United States. As I’ve previously stated, there are many people across the globe who have negative preconceived notions about Americans and their culture. I will now be more conscious about my behavior and actions, as I realize I have a unique opportunity to possibly change the poor feelings that some people have for the United States.
