Growing Up in the South one of the main aspects of Southern American culture is Southern Hospitality. In Georgia, it is customary to be seen as warm, welcoming, and friendly. You will often be greeted with a warm welcome. It is common to have many conversations with strangers. “Small talk” is very common throughout the United States however in the South it is a lot more prevalent. Many times strangers will not only have small conversations but it is also common to speak to them about your life. In the South, many people will never say negative things to you. You will rarely hear anyone outright judge somebody. I personally believe that this is a good thing. Although I am not the biggest fan of small talk I really appreciate how people will take the time to smile and have a conversation. Whenever I leave home I get a little sad when not as many people smile and have a conversation with me. Sometimes I feel as though it helps me feel more comfortable in a stressful or new environment. Although now southern hospitality can have its drawbacks as well. I know that in the south it is very common to make backhanded comments or to speak in a way that seems sweet but is not. For example, if someone were to say “bless your heart” they are not actually wishing you well rather they are silently judging you. Southern hospitality can be taken in many ways some foreigners might find it odd that Americans often engage in small talk and some might find it very welcoming. I would completely understand if some people felt as if Southern culture/Southern mannerisms and speech were very false. I know that some people might believe that Southern Hospitality might be very “fake”. However, I also believe that people from other cultures might really appreciate how warm and welcoming people in the South can be. I know that American culture can come off as rude or as overly friendly. however, I believe that all cultures can be seen in multiple ways. I also believe that no culture is better than the other and many are amazing in their own way. This exercise has really helped prepare me for my time in Hong Kong. I know that when I arrive I will be able to adapt to the new culture a lot easier. I also know that I will now arrive in Hong Kong with an open mind. I know that It is okay to not enjoy every aspect of this new culture however, I also know that I cannot judge any aspect of the culture. This exercise has taught me to appreciate my own culture and to also appreciate other cultures.
