After being in Morocco for a little over a month, something that I have learned is how greatly public transportation is utilized and how important it is for people living here including myself. Here in Morocco, there are different types of public transportation such as petit taxis, grand taxis, busses, and trains. I personally have utilized petit taxis and grand taxis the most. A petit taxi is a normal-sized taxi cab that’ll take you from point A to point B within a city or a town. A grand taxi is a larger taxi that you take for a longer distance of travel. Grand taxis can hold up to 6 passengers and when choosing the grand taxi option to get to another city, you have the option of waiting for the grand taxi to fill up with 6 people or you can pay the full price of the grand taxi if you are wanting to travel in the vehicle alone. For example, traveling from Ifrane to Fes in a grand taxi with 6 people costs 35 dirhams per person whereas if you were to go alone in a grand taxi it’d cost 210 dirhams. Another great thing about transportation in Morocco is that there is a set price when traveling from place to place using public transportation. This means that if a taxi driver is trying to charge you more than the legally set price, you always have the option to remind them that there is a set price. This is extremely important to know when you are a foreigner because foreigners tend to be the people who get scammed the most here. Using the public transportation here has allowed for me to feel like I fit in better with the general population. I have also met some very kind Moroccans who I have shared taxis with that were able to help me translate things and also tell me what the set price was for that specific ride so that I wouldn’t get scammed. The people of Morocco have been incredibly helpful when it comes to trying to figure out taxis and trains and am extremely grateful for that.
